Technical glossaries and termbases
What are technical glossaries?
Glossaries are simple lists or databases containing words preferred by each client. In other words, a list of words in an Excel spreadsheet. Typically, preferred translations appear in the next column.
Some termbases are multilingual, some are just bilingual. They contain terminology data in different languages. Size varies between 1 and millions of words.
Ideally, translators should create a glossary for every customer. After creating it, an internal reviewer should validate it. He/she can make any changes they like.
Integration with CAT tools
A termbase integrates into Computer Aided Translation software. Therefore, approved terminology goes into the translation. This allows us to increase the quality of a translation.
Always choose the same word
A termbase will make sure that a translation uses the same word every time.
For example, medical condition should not be translated to Spanish in different ways. It could be enfermedad, afección or problema de salud. They are all correct.
However, we should always choose the option in the termbase.
