There is more to being a good translator than being able to show you are well qualified or that you know many words in both source and target languages. If you want to be considered a good translator, then you know that there is much to being a good translator than being able to replace one word with another in the target language. There are a number of skills that every translator needs to possess in order to be considered a good translator.
Translating content can be very challenging and to be considered a good translator, one needs to be very talented as well as must be ready to study and work hard. Unless a translator is able to master both languages, he or she will not be considered a good translator. The fact is most languages are evolving and will change with the times. Second, good translators also need to be good writers in both languages. To develop their writing skills, good translators must read as this can help them become good writers. They also need to attend writing classes and they also need to read up on technical matter and they should also be abreast with all changes in vocabulary and spelling in both languages.
Overcome cultural barriers
When translating, it is important to overcome cultural barriers. This means to be considered a good translator, one must also possess cultural intelligence. You need to be sympathetic towards the audience who will read your translated work. Cultural intelligence helps you to interact and work with people from different backgrounds.
Also, good translators are those who possess special knowledge. They need to be specialists in a particular field. This means they must possess a degree in a certain domain as then they will be able to do a better job of translating matter.
Powers of observation
Finally, good translators also need to be observant and they should possess excellent computer skills. They also need to be good at managing time. Time is money and so it makes sense for a translator to work to a tight schedule and deadline. In order to be considered a good translator, it is necessary to spend plenty of time practicing in both languages. The above-mentioned skills are considered essential and without them no translator will be considered good at their work.
The job of a translator is challenging and so good translators are people who can evaluate themselves objectively and be ready to learn something new every day. Good translators must also be ready to reinvent themselves so that they are well prepared to meet whatever challenge comes their way.
