There was a long line at the gas station and I stopped my car behind a big 4×4 that was parked for a really long time at the pump. It was one of those gas-guzzling tanks driven by women who have too little patience and too much money.
As I waited, I went to pull out my phone, but decided to take a look around instead: two siblings fighting in the back seat, a dull grey car being rinsed off by an equally dull owner, a gas station employee smiling, his mind somewhere else to make the workday brighter, a fifty-year-old on a huge motorcycle looking around self-satisfied like he’s watching us age from his pedestal of eternal youth, a dog with no collar and no hope, a woman waiting in her car watching it all, parked behind a big 4×4…
What would have happened if I had taken out my phone? What would I have written about today? Social media, a joke, a photograph? A 1-minute video, an enigmatic quote? Then 10 most-visited villages in Spain? The 10 best cheeses in Europe? The 10 worst-dressed people in the world?
Turn off your phones and take a look around.
